Skincare – what’s behind the price tag?

Most skin crèmes look, feel and smell similar. So why do they differ so greatly in price? The answer lies in research, development, ingredients and results.

‘High price’ doesn’t mean ‘expensive’

One question we are often asked by those new to the Nefera brand is ‘What’s behind the price tag?’ or ‘Why are your products so expensive?’ So the first thing to discuss as we begin this article is the definition of ‘expensive’. Expensive usually means ‘overpriced’ in most people’s vocabulary – and the cost of Nefera products isn’t inflated in any way. When you pay good money for something and it delivers, it no longer becomes expensive. Therefore the real question should be ‘Why is the price so high?’

The price in fact reflects the research, dedicated development and results you’ll experience from using the products, as we explain later. When buying anything, but especially skincare, it’s important to look for value for money and results – not just taking a price tag at face value. What do you gain from using the product? And if you were to put a number on it, what would that be? Women who’ve tried Nefera tell us that the effect it has had on their confidence is priceless – and this is where pricing becomes complicated in the skincare industry.

Why are skincare crèmes priced differently?

The pricing structure of skincare is tricky, as above. Four principal factors influence the cost of a product.

The first is origin. Most skin crèmes are sold by huge conglomerates, massive companies incorporating many brands. For example, Estee Lauder, Crème De La Mer, Origins and Liz Earle are all part of the same parent company. This means that their motivation is ultimately driven by sales and success. When you purchase from a privately owned company, you tend to receive a product of genuine passion, care and a desire to share something wonderful with the world. Bigger companies often mass produce and focus on the margins, not the manner in which a product instils confidence and makes customers feel confident. The same can also be true vice versa – but what you really need to know is that care and contemplation has gone into the product, and that you are buying from a company you trust.

Secondly, consider the ingredients in your skincare. Ingredients can be sourced cheaply – or they can be incredibly costly. Take for instance glycerine – a staple ingredient in many moisturisers. This is readily available, cheap to manufacture and low cost to buy in bulk. At the other end of the scale are limited quantity or hard to extract ingredients with a high price tag, such as retinol, gold and certain peptides. Naturally, companies have to pass on the cost of the ingredients they incorporate, and as a rule, costly ingredients make for more costly products – and ingredients have a higher price tag for a reason.

Proven results also affect price. When a product has been scientifically proven to work, it naturally attracts a higher price tag. This isn’t just because of consumer impression – it’s also down to the time and money invested in having a product certified scientifically, and having research conducted with test subjects and appropriate experts and environments. Nefera products have been thoroughly and meticulously developed and tested in a clinical environment, created with medical expertise. This is understandably a much more costly type of development compared with a simple, minimally tested skin crème incorporating only a few basic ingredients.

Emotions and personal preference blur the lines of pricing. For example, clever branding on a useless product is likely to be favoured over uninspiring branding for a skin crème proven to deliver results. This is the nature of skincare and beauty – and a lot rests of appearance and promises, not what’s inside when consumers make a decision to buy. It’s easy to assume that a pretty looking, expensive crème is ‘the best’ when in fact its ingredients and results are open to interpretation.

The highest price doesn’t necessarily mean the best product

Whilst there are brands with products deserving of their high price tags, unfortunately high cost doesn’t always equal high quality. Cheap skin crèmes tend to incorporate cheaper ingredients in higher quantities. But ironically even expensive crèmes can be marked up monstrously, containing a very similar ingredients list to a high street or supermarket product. Beware of unscrupulous claims, bogus reviews and bold promises. Instead collect information from people who have used the products, and research the ingredients and philosophy behind them.

Why is Nefera highly priced?

The Nefera range is the product of over ten years’ research conducted by renowned plastic surgeon Dr Farid Kazem. Using his extensive knowledge of the skin’s structure and behaviour, he spent a considerable amount of time and money creating the Nefera concept and selecting unique peptide Ennapeptide M, which is exclusive to our products. Nefera is a premium product – with a luxurious feel, packaging and presentation. But more than that, it works. This isn’t a case of style over substance, or clever branding. What you pay for when you choose Nefera is quality, care and most importantly of all, reliable results.

Coming back to value for money, Nefera is clinically formulated – and therefore it boasts proven, remarkable results for ageing skin. Compare this to treatments promising a similar effect – such as Botox or facial fillers, and chemical peels. On a yearly basis regular Botox injections would amount to €1,740 whilst annual chemical peels can come in at €1900. A years’ worth of Nefera costs €1500 – and by comparison the results achieved are more natural – and much less invasive.
