Many anti-ageing creams now incorporate ingredients called peptides, which promise to smooth and renew skin. Yet many women still aren’t aware of exactly what peptides are, what they do and how they are beneficial. The Nefera peptide is the principal ingredient in our skincare collection – so in our very first article we explore the science of peptides, and explain why they possess such powerful regenerative properties.

What are peptides?

Peptides are a key ingredient in many anti-ageing skincare solutions – as they essentially help the skin to produce more collagen, the protein responsible for keeping skin supple and smooth. Collagen takes the form of a long ‘chain’ of amino acids – and peptides are in fact smaller chains of amino acids, formed when collagen breaks down. A great number of scientific studies have proven that peptides can help to manage fine lines and imperfections, and actively improve skin’s condition as it ages. There are however different types of peptides, all with varying properties and potencies. Skincare ranges tend to use a blend or focus on just one type of peptide alone to produce clear, lasting results.

How do peptides work?

Over time, skin naturally loses its collagen. This is due to ageing and other environmental factors such as poor health, pollution and sun exposure. As a result skin becomes thinner and lacks elasticity, causing wrinkles, lines and sagging to occur. So how do peptides combat this? One particular study (conducted by the National Institutes of Health in Pakistan) revealed that when applied topically, peptides send a neurological ‘message’ to your skin that it has lost collagen, and needs to replenish it. Essentially peptides draw attention to a loss of collagen in the skin, therefore encouraging it to produce more. The result is the remarkable ability for a skincare cream to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, alleviate Eczema and Dermatitis and repair scars – without adverse side effects.

Why are peptides important for those concerned with ageing skin?

As explained above, peptides play an important role in the regeneration of skin – and protection for the future. One of their main benefits is safety – they are effective, yet generally don’t cause side effects or irritation. They are a popular non-invasive alternative compared with fillers and facelifts.

What makes Nefera’s peptide unique and powerful?

Nefera’s peptide cannot be found in any other skin cream – as it’s totally unique to our brand. The company is actually named after the peptide – which is called Nefera itself. Discovered deep under the sea, the Nefera peptide (or Ennapeptide M, as it is officially known) is derived from the Black Pollack species of fish, found in the North Sea. This specific peptide showed remarkable results in studies – activating the body’s natural immune response to aid skin healing and regeneration. Even just 72 hours into testing, it was clear that cells attached themselves strongly to Ennapeptide M, demonstrating its rapid ability to repair connective tissue and aid in the rejuvenation of skin, and the replenishment of lost collagen supplies.

Peptides need powerful delivery

One cream or serum containing peptides isn’t necessarily going to be as effective as the next – even if they feature the exact same ingredient in a similar quantity. Why? It’s all about delivery. The other ingredients peptides are combined with determine how they are received by the skin, and where they will be put to work. Nefera’s formula has been specially designed to target the deepest layers of skin, known as the environment in which the formative stages of skin take place. “In order for the peptide to work you need to choose the right vehicle; nanotechnology allows the peptide to get exactly where it needs to go,” explains Nefera founder and developer plastic surgeon Dr Farid Kazem. This is why cutting-edge nanotechnology is incorporated into Nefera products – to allow for precision application and therefore better results.

Have you tried peptides?

Peptides are popular, non-invasive ingredients contained within many anti-ageing skincare brands – but only Nefera products feature Ennapeptide M’s astounding ability to regenerate and renew the skin.
